AloneFor the pen and ink project, I really wanted to use song lyrics in the background. I chose the song "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day. This song is a big part of my life because I listened to it during a really hard time. I used my friend, Abby, as my subject matter because she was there through my rough patch. I used a lot of line in this project, especially in the hair. I also used contrast between her and the white background.

Falling Into DarknessFor this project, I used a picture of myself and a picture of my friend, Celine. I used all colored pencil for this project. I used a lot of curved lines in the flow of a pattern in the background. I also used space with Celine being smaller to show the surrealism of the project. I used contrast with the colors of the shirt, and also with the background. Sometimes, you can feel like you're continuously falling and you have no way of getting back up. I wanted to show that with this project as I have Celine looking like she's falling into a black hole. I also was referencing a scene in the movie Halloweentown II.

Eye SeeFor this project, I used my eye as my subject matter. I used a lot of contrast between the color of the eye and the whites of the eye, along with the skin tone, eyelashes and eyebrow. I also used some movement with the direction of the eyebrow and the eyelashes. I definitely used a lot of rounded and curvy lines for the eyelashes, and some short, condensed lines in the iris. I think what I used most was value, because there are many different value shifts between the lightness of the skin and the darkness of the eyebrow, and also the darker shade of the eyelid with the even darker eyelashes over it. I really wanted to capture the realness of the eye and the exact direction I was looking when I took this picture. I think I accomplished that pretty well.

Pop ArtI chose to use Hugh Jackman for this project because he is my favorite actor. I decided to not use just a solid background because I thought it would look great to paint each section in a different shade of green. I used shades in the background to make it dark. I used tints for his suit because I felt it would really show the contrast between him and the background. I used tones for his hair and face because I thought that it would be a good contrast between the suit and his face. In every section, the darkest colors were used in the darkest spots in the picture and the lightest colors were used in the lightest spots. It didn't turn out exactly how I pictured it, but overall I think I did pretty good on this project, especially with his suit.

Leo MugLeonardo da Vinci was my inspiration for the design of the mug. I didn't think that I summarize how his work was in one design, so I used a beautiful quote from him. His quote says, "Art is never finished, only abandoned." When I saw that quote, I knew I had to use it for this project. I discovered that I'm not the best at making mugs, but I liked the experience. I liked the challenge.

Self PortraitFor this project, I took a selfie using a snapchat filter for my self portrait. I used many long, curvy lines for the length of my hair. I also used some short, rounded lines for the top of my hair in between the ears of the filter. I used color in the ears, the nose, and my eyes. I wanted my eyes to pop, so I decided to use a splash of color in the iris of my eye. I used pattern for the waviness of my hair because there is a lot of repeating motion. I also used contrast between the colors I chose and just the value of my face and hair, especially in my eyes. The iris of blue really stands out against the darkness of the pupil and and the lightness of the white of my eyes. I had a shaky start, but I am really proud of how it turned out.

Value Project I chose my cat, Tiger, for the value project. He has light and dark stripes, so I figured he'd be perfect for this project. I really wanted to capture his yawn and how relaxed he was as he was sitting on my couch. I mostly used the 6B and 4B pencils for this project. Since he is so dark in some spots and a little lighter in others, I felt that those two pencils were the best option. I used a lot of contrast between the dark stripes and more white spaces. I decided to leave most of the background as an off white because I felt that in doing that, it would help to show that the main focus of this piece is the cat. I also used pattern with his stripes. In my opinion, his eyes, nose, and mouth were the most complicated to do. The easiest part and the best looking part in the piece is his ears. They were simple and they are what I'm most proud of in this project.

Party! This is Derek. I met him at a wedding, and we had a great time at the reception. I chose him for this project because he had so much fun dancing. I used a lot of line in this as well as movement. I have many straight, skinny lines mixed with zig zag bold lines. I showed movement because everything points to him. I also used a variety of colors. I didn't stick with one color scheme. I decided to use a rainbow of colors. Along with line, color, and movement, I also used rhythm. I went from sharpie to color over and over again in all the sections. I chose to use the colors and lines the way I did to show fun. I wanted to really bring out how much fun he had that night along with the rest of us. We all danced and had lots of fun the entire night, but I thought he was having the most fun out of all of us. I made sure to show that with the designs I chose and the explosion of color mixed with simple sharpie.
